LearningEnglishasasecondlanguageprimarilyinvolvestheacquirementoffourmajorskillsets,namely,reading,writing,speakingandlistening.Amongthesefour,speakingstandsoutasthemostmisunderstood,overlookedandunderestimatedelementinEnglishlanguageteaching.ThisessaypresentsacomprehensivereviewofresearchrelatedtoEnglishpronunciationskillsacquisition,factorsthataffectsuccessfulEnglishlanguagelearning,andstrategiesthatcanbeemployedbystudentstoimprovetheirEnglishspeakingskills.

IssuesandChallengesinEnglishLanguagePronunciationLearning:

Englishbeingalanguage,whichhasavastnumberofdialectsandthusposesseveralpronunciationchallengesforspeakers.Pronunciationistheprimaryfactorthatcharacterizesapersonslanguageproficiency.InthecontextofEnglishlanguagelearning,pronunciationiscrucialbutoftenoverlookedintheclassroom.Manycountries,whereEnglishproficiencyislackingamongtheircitizens,havebeenexperiencingtheuseofpoordictionandpronunciationofEnglishwords.

Additionally,studentswholearnEnglishasasecondlanguageoftenfinditdifficulttoacquirepronunciationskills,whichmakesithardforthemtocommunicateeffectivelyduringtheirstudiesorinworkplaces.Factorsthataffectpronunciationskillsacquisitionincludeage,individualdifferences,teachingmethods,andexposuretothelanguage.

ImpactofAge:

Ageplaysafundamentalfactorintheacquisitionoflanguageandoftenleadstodifficultiesingoodpronunciation.Youngchildrenhavehigherabilitiestolearnnewlanguagesandtoacquireaccuratepronunciationskillswhencomparedtoadultswhomaystruggletoacquirethesameskills.Thus,ageisanessentialfactortoconsiderwhenhelpingindividualswhointendtolearnEnglishasasecondlanguage.
