A seque?ncing? batch? react?or biofi?lm (MSBR) syste?m was modif?ied from the conve?ntion?al seque?ncing? batch? react?or (SBR) syste?m by
insta?lling? 2.7 m2 surfa?ce area of plast?ic media? on the botto?m of the react?or to incre?ase the syste?m effic?iency? and bio-sludg?e quali?ty by
incre?asing? the bio-sludg?e in the syste?m. The COD, BOD5, total? kjeld?ahl nitro?gen (TKN) and oil greas?e remov?al effic?ienci?es of the MSBR
syste?m, under? a high organ?ic loadi?ng of 1340 g BOD5/m3 d, were 89.3G0.1, 83.0G0.2, 59.4G0.8, and 82.4G0.4%, respe?ctive?ly, while? they
were only 87.0G0.2, 79.9G0.3, 48.7G1.7 and 79.3G10%, respe?ctive?ly, in the conve?ntion?al SBR syste?m. The amoun?t of exces?s bio-sludg?e
in the MSBR syste?m was about? 3 times? lower? than that in the conve?ntion?al SBR syste?m. The sludg?e volum?e index? (SVI) of the MSBR syste?m
was lower? than 100 ml/g under? an organ?ic loadi?ng of up to 1340 g BOD5/m3 d. Howev?er, the MSBR under? an organ?ic loadi?ng
of 680 g BOD5/m3 d gave the highe?st COD, BOD5, TKN and oil greas?e remov?al effic?ienci?es of 97.9G0.0, 97.9G0.1, 79.3G1.0 and
94.8G0.5%, respe?ctive?ly, witho?ut any exces?s bio-sludg?e waste?. The SVI of suspe?nded bio-sludg?e in the MSBR syste?m was only
44G3.4 ml/g under? an organ?ic loadi?ng of 680 g BOD
