Cross-Culture Barries in Reading of English Abstract:In English learning,reading is an important part.The ability to read English is also an important symbol to measure one’s level of English. This paper,from the aspects of the difference of cross-culture, discusses the cause of the problem and the solutions to this problem. Firstly, it emphasizes the role of the cross-culture knowledge , elaborates the problems that Chinese students encounter in English reading. Then it points out where the barriers lie. Additionally, it explores the cause of the barriers, mainly including the difference in thought patterns and values. At last, the paper gives some possible methods to overcome the barriers and improve the reading ability. Key Words :reading reading ability cross-culture barries reading skills 1. Introduction Decoding and comprehension are the two main tasks for reading: In English learning, the elements, which influence the reading are linguistic knowledge, cultural background knowledge , language skills , and intelligent elements (the abilities of thought such as motivation, purpose, emotion and control). Mastering linguistic knowledge of phonetics, vocabulary and grammar is helpful to decode the word symbols. However, in the process of reading, many Chinese students already possess the above knowledge, but they still can not comprehend the texts completely, so understanding the cultural content of what one reads is a crucial factor in reading comprehension. The paper, from the perspective of cross-cultural communication, tries to analyze the role of cultural knowledge in reading comprehension, generalizes the comprehension barriers Chinese students meet in the comprehension process of English reading and explains the relationship between the barriers and language.
