UHMW PE Product General Information 1. Introduction Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, also known as UHMW PE, is a common applied material in the marine industry for its corrosion proof, low friction, non marking, anti shock, anti abrasion properties. Because of these extraordinary properties, Zalda Technology utilize UHMW PE material in several applications. Our primary application of UHMW PE material is fender system face pads. This literature will focus mainly on this application. We also utilize UHMW PE material for other applications. For example, UHMW PE can sometimes be used as outer shell for plastic pile and lumber products. Contact us should you require further information on special applications. 2. Fendering Applications Stand Alone Fender Pads For small impact applications, UHMW PE sheets can be made into flat pads to be fitted to flat mounting surface, or angled pads to be fitted to pier corners, or even curved pads to be mounted around timber, concrete, or steel piles. PE pads can be fixed to the structure with anchor bolts, through bolts or studs. In these applications, PE pads protects the pier by providing a shock absorbing, slippery surface and by directing impacts towards the directions parallel to the pier. Fender Mounted Face Pads For medium impact applications, smaller rubber fenders, such as rectangular fenders, arch fenders and small element fenders, are fitted with UHMW PE flat pads to form a simple fender system that has the elastic shock absorbing properties of rubber and the low friction / anti abrasion properties of UHMW PE.
