Preparation and Characterization of Activated Carbon
from Sol idago Canadensis by H3 PO4 Activation

Abstract: T he highly efficient activated carbon w as prepared from Solidago Canadensis , an invasive alien
w eed, by phosphoric acid activation according to orthogonal test method. T he effects of operation parame
ters such as impregnation ratio( A) , phosphoric acid concentration( B) , activation temperature( C) and time
( D) on the adsorption properties and yield of activated carbons w ere evaluated. It w as indicated that the op
timum conditions w ere as follow s: impregnation ratio w as 1/ 3( g/ ml) , phosphoric acid concentration w as
40% , activation temperature w as 400 , and activation time w as 60 min. T he amount of methylene blue
adsorption, the iodine number, the activation yield and the surface area of activated carbon prepared under

the optimum condition w ere 273. 2mg/ g, 1210. 89mg/ g, 60. 83% and 677. 910 m / g, respectively . T G w as
used to analyze the carbonation process of Solidag oCanadensis before and
