【正文】I. IntroductionNow we have entered a new stage, when further opening up and exchanges with other nations are being made in terms of politics, culture, science and technology. Thus great emphasis has been played on interpretation. Today, there are basically two types of interpreting, namely, consecutive interpreting?(CI) and simultaneous interpreting. In the consecutive mode, the interpreter gives his interpretation immediately after the speaker has finished a segment of his speech. The segments may last from a few seconds to several minutes. CI is the earliest form of professional interpreting. Since the speaker pauses from time to time for the interpreter to interpret each segment of the speech, the interpreter has the time to take notes and analyze the message as a whole so that he can understand the message more easily. Nowadays, CI is still widely conducted on many occasions, such as press conference, welcoming addresses, speeches for banquets and business negotiations. However, CI is too time-consuming, and the audience has to listen to the same message in both the source language and the target language. Moreover, the speaker has to wait for a segment to be interpreted into the target language before he can deliver the next segment. For these reasons, CI is a noble profession that requires dedication to excellence and commitment.II. Characteristics of Consecutive InterpretationA.
