Title:fMRIStudyonChangesinAuditoryConductionPathwayinPatientswithUnilateralSensorineuralHearingLoss

Introduction:

Sensorineuralhearinglossisacommondisorder,whichoftenaffectsoneearmorethantheother.Patientswithunilateralsensorineuralhearinglosshavedifficultyinlocalizingsoundsources,understandingspeechinnoisyenvironments,andmaintainingbalance.Thistypeofhearinglossiscausedbydamagetotheinnerearorauditorynerve,whichresultsinareductioninneuralsignalstothebrain.

Functionalmagneticresonanceimaging(fMRI)isanon-invasivetechniquethatcanprovideinformationonbrainactivationinresponsetodifferentstimuli.PreviousstudieshaveusedfMRItoinvestigatethechangesinauditorypathwayinpatientswithsensorineuralhearingloss.However,themajorityofthesestudieshavefocusedonbilateralhearingloss,andfewhaveinvestigatedthechangesinunilateralhearingloss.

Objective:

ThemainobjectiveofthisstudyistoinvestigatethechangesintheauditoryconductionpathwayinpatientswithunilateralsensorineuralhearinglossusingfMRI.Specifically,wewillexaminetheactivationpatternsintheauditorycortexandotherbrainregionsinresponsetoauditorystimuli.Wewillalsoinvestigatethechangesinthewhitematterstructureoftheauditorypathwayusingdiffusiontensorimaging(DTI).

Methods:

Thestudywillrecruit20patientswithunilateralsensorineuralhearinglossand20healthycontrols.Allparticipantswillundergoacomprehensiveaudiologicalevaluationtoassesstheirhearingsensitivityandspeechrecognitionability.ThefMRIdatawillbeacquiredusinga3TMRIscannerwhiletheparticipantslistentoaseriesofauditorystimuli.TheDTIdatawillalsobeacquiredtoanalyzethewhitematterstructureoftheauditorypathway.ThefMRIandDTIdatawillbeanalyzedusingstandardneuroimagingsoftwaretoidentifythechangesin
