John Parker --one of the freedom givers John P. Parker Born: 1827 Died: January 30, 1900 Birthplace: Norfolk, Virginia John Parker was the son of a white father and a slave mother. He was sold to a slave agent at age eight. He was bought by a doctor, and he accompanied the doctors sons to attend college in the north when he was 16. In Ripley, Parker joined the resistance movement to aid slaves escaping across the river from Kentucky to get North to freedom via the?Underground Railroad. He devoted his life to forays in Kentucky, to scouting on both sides of the Ohio River, to taking care of the helpless slaves who had found their way to Ohio and could not get across, to actual fighting for them and against their pursuing masters. People never forget him after he died. They do a lot to honor the great person. * I’m free! He was then apprenticed to a foundry and iron manufacturer and managed to buy his own freedom for $1,800 in 1845. In 1854, Parker started a foundry named Ripley Foundry and Machine Company.
