Oneday,duringaparticularlychallengingmathclass,Iwasstrugglingtounderstandacomplexproblem.Theteacher,Mrs.Lee,noticedmyconfusionandaskedifIneededhelp.BeforeIcouldanswer,Tomspokeup.“I-I-I-Icanhelp,”heoffered,hisstutterbecamemerenoticeableunderthepressure.Tomysurprise,heexplainedtheproblemclearly,andIbegantoseehiminanewlight.Hisintelligenceandkindnessshonethroughhisstutter,andIfeltguilty(内疚的)formypreviousbehavior.

Astheweekswentby,IstartedtopaymoreattentiontoTom.Myfriendsnoticedthechangeandaskedaboutit.IsharedmyinitialdislikeandlateradmirationforTom.Theyencouragedmetogivehimachance,remindingmethateveryonehastheirstruggles.Myparents,too,noticedmyshiftinattitudeanddiscussedtheimportanceofempathyandunderstanding.Theytoldmeaboutthetimestheyfaceddifficulties,showingmethateveryonehasstrengthsbeyondwhatpeoplemightseeasweaknesses.

Theturningpointinourrelationshipcameduringtheschool’sannualtalentshow.Tom,despitehisfearofpublicspeaking,decidedtotakepartinit.
