Design method of toppling stability of highway retaining wall

Abstract: By mechanic analysis, toppling damage pattern of retaining wall was put forward, a new definition of toppling
stability coefficient was given, the calculating formula of toppling stability coefficient was presented, and a new design
method about retaining wall toppling stability was established. The results show that the toppling stability coefficient has
a definite relationship with the ultimate bearing capability of foundation, that is, the former increases with the latter.
Compared with the current specifications, the toppling stability coefficient obtained in the new method is smaller. The
traditional design of toppling stability can not attain the anticipatory value of secure store. It is the main reason why the
majority of retaining walls are damaged by toppling. The toppling stability design can be checked applying the new
method in engineering practice, and it is essential to revise the design when necessary.
