1. Introduction
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration’s (NOAA) NWS Weather Event
Simulator (WES) is a Linux-based software
package that allows the playback and simulation
of weather events using operational software and
archived datasets from the NOAA’s National
Weather Service (NWS). The WES software is
released with an operational build of the NWS’s
Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System
(AWIPS) software (Fig. 1). Development and
release of WES is managed by the Warning
Decision Training Branch (WDTB) in collaboration
