LocatedinQinghaiProvinceofNorthwestChina,thelakeisfamousforthetwoislandsatitsnorthwestpoint—CormorantIslandandEggIsland.Thetwoislandshaveplentyoffloatinggrassandvariousfish,offeringrichfoodsourcestobirds.Theislandshavebecomeaparadisefordifferentkindsofgroupsofbirdsandhavebeencalled“BirdIslands”.

EachMarchandApril,wheniceandsnowcoveringtheQinghai-TibetPlateau(高原)starttomelt,over20kindsofbirdsflytotheBirdIslandstolayeggs.Duringthemonths,flocksofbirdscoverthewholeskyovertheislandsandbirdeggscanbefoundeverywhere.Visitorscanhearthesingingofbirdsfrommilesaway.Thesehavebecomeaworld-famoussymbolofthelake.

Toprotectthisparadiseforbirdsandsupportcallsforecologicalprotection,ChinasetuptheQinghaiLakeNationalNaturalReserveattheendof1997.Meanwhile,theStatehaspointedoutthattheBirdIslandsandSpringBayofQinghaiLakewerecentralreserves.

Inspectorsandconservatorsoftenpatrol(巡逻)thelake,enrichinglocalresidentsknowledgeofrelatedlawsandspreadingknowledgeaboutanimalprotectiontovisitors.Theyaremakinggreateffortstocallonpeopletoloveandprotectthebirds.Atthesametime,theyhavebuiltspecialfencesaroundtheislandareatopreventwolves,foxesandothercarnivorousanimals,aswellasillegalhuntersfrombreakingupthebirdsbuildingnests,layingeggsandbreeding(繁殖).Asaresult,moreandmorebirdsarecomingtotheislandsforshelteringandbreeding.
