Thereareanumberofanalogiesbetweenthemanufactureofcomplexproductssuchasships,aircraftandcarsandtheexecutionofaparallelprogram.Themanufactureofashipiscarriedoutaccordingtoaproductionplanwhichensuresthatallthecomponentscometogetherattherighttimeattherightplace.Aparallelcomputerapplicationshouldensurethattheappropriatedataisavailableontheappropriateprocessorinatimelyfashion.
Itisnotsurprising,therefore,thatmanufacturingisplaguedbyindeterminacyexactlyasareparallelprogramsexecutingonmulti-processorhardware.Thishascausedanumberofresearchersinproductionengineeringtoseekinspirationinotherareaswheremanagingcomplexityandunpredictabilityisimportant.Anumberofnewparadigms,suchasHolonicManufacturingandFractalFactorieshaveemerged[1,2]whichcontainideasratherreminiscentofthosetobefoundinthefieldofMulti-AgentSystems[3,4].
