MALEPROFESSOR:Imgladyougotmymessageandwereabletomakeit,butwherearetheothermembersofyourgroup,TomandJane?

FEMALESTUDENT:Theyreactuallyatthelibrary.Theyhaveabiologylabassignmentthatsduelaterthisafternoon,soImheretorepresentthewholegroup.

But,um,whenwegotyoure-mailmessage—aboutbeingworriedaboutourresearchproject—wewerealittleconfused.Wethoughtyouwereexcitedaboutourideafortheproject.

MALEPROFESSOR:Well,Ithinkitsagreatresearchtopic,butwhenIlookedcloselyatyourplanforaccomplishingtheresearch,Irealizedthatyourgroupwasprobablyaskingforsometrouble.

FEMALESTUDENT:Whatdoyoumean?Ithoughtthatyouknow,bymonitoringstudentsstudyinginthelibrary,wecouldreally,uh,getagoodunderstandingofpeople’studyhabitsandstuff.

MALEPROFESSOR:Thethingis,IthinkyoumighthaveaproblembecauseoftheHawthorneeffect.

FEMALESTUDENT:TheHawthorneeffect?

MALEPROFESSOR:TheHawthorneeffectisatechnicaltermforwhenresearchers.uh,moreorlessforgetaboutaspecificvariable,thevariableoftheresearchersthemselves.

Now,thestudentsinthelibrary,theyregoingtoknowthatyou’reobservingthem,right?Soyouhavetoconsidertheeffectyourverypresencewillhaveonthepeopleyou’reobserving.
