Origin Legend Customs * Double Ninth Festival Contents Origin The 9th day of the 9th lunar month is Double Ninth Festival, also called “the day for elders”. In the ancient book Yi Jing, number 6 was thought to be of Yin character, meaning feminine(阴性的) or negative, while number 9 was thought to be Yang, meaning masculine(阳性的) or positive. Both the 9th month and the 9th day of the month belong to “Yang”, and “Chong” means double in Chinese. 九九重阳与“久久”同音,有长久长寿的含义 Double Ninth Festival is one of the four Chinese traditional festivals of ancestor worship. It has formed during the Warring States Period and been published as a folk festival in the Tang Dynasty. Origin 中国四大祭祖节日:除夕、清明、中元、重阳 Legend It is said long time ago there appeared a devil of plague in the Ruhe river. People lay down and died wherever it came up. A boy named Huan Jing swore to help his neighbors and fellow people to get rid of it. He visited many famous mountains to find a powerful fairy. The fairy was deeply moved and determined to teach him how to defeat the evil. Huan Jing put his whole heart into study and practice. Legend On the 9th day of September, Huan Jing obeyed the fairy’s exhortation and brought his neighbors to a mountain nearby. He gave everybody a bag of cornels and a pot of chrysanthemum wine. After several time the devil of plague rushed out of the hell, but it was stopped by the odor of cornel and wine. Huan Jing seized the chance to hit the devil and finally penetrated its heart. From that time on the customs of climbing mountains and drinking chrysanthemum wine come down to us. Double Ninth Festival falls in the golden season of autumu.The comfortable weather and the joy of harvest are usually perfect for outdoor activities. Many people go hiking and climbing mountains in the countryside. This custom of climbing mountains can be dated back as early as West Han Dynasty.
