Chinese J ou rnal of Ecology , 1999 ,18 ( 1) :43 - 52 . Intercropping in rubber plantation has been practiced in China since 1950s. Now t he area under in tercropping is about 25000 ha . , in which t he rubber plantations mainly have been intercropp ed wit h - 1 tea bush ,sugar cane ,pineapple ,p epp er etc . A net economic return as 2300 - 12500 Yuan ·ha · year - 1 can be achieved from t he intercropping. The land use cap acity is increased by 30 % - 50 % , t he soil erosion is lessened by about 1/ 3 , t he soil nutrient status is enhanced and more job opportuni ties are created by 150 % - 1000 % in t he plantations wit h reasonable intercropping. The kinds of crop s suitable for intercropping in t he plantations are gradually reduced due to t he growing of shade of rubber trees. The rubber and intercrop s are benefied each ot her but comp eted in nutrient and sun light in t he new ecosystems formed after intercropping.
