Inthestillnessofthenight,whentheworldseemedtobeinagentleslumber,asuddenandviolenttremorshatteredthetranquilityinTaiwan.Theearthquake,likeawrathfulgiantawakeningfromitslongslumber,unleasheditsterrifyingpower,sendingshockwavesthrougheverycorneroftheisland.
IwasmilesawaywhenIfirstheardthenews,buttheimagesthatsoonfloodedmyscreenmademyheartsink.Thesceneswerenothingshortofanightmare.Buildingsthatoncestoodtallandproudnowlayinruins,brokenconcreteandtwistedsteelbeamsscatteredhaphazardly.Streetsthatwereoncebustlingwithlifewerenowfilledwithdustanddebris,andthecriesoftheinjuredandthelostechoedintheair.
Icouldnthelpbutthinkaboutthepeoplewhohadbeencaughtinthemidstofthisdisaster.Familieswhohadgonetobedwithdreamsandhopesforthenextdaynowfoundthemselvesfacingtheharshrealityofdestruction.Children,whoshouldhavebeensleepingsoundlyintheirwarmbeds,werenowhuddledinfear,theirinnocenteyesfilledwithconfusionandterror.
AsIwatchedtherescueteamsworkingtirelessly,myheartswelledwithadmirationandgratitude.Thesebravesouls,riskingtheirownlives,rushedintothedangerousareastosearchforsurvivors.Theydugthroughtherubblewiththeirbarehands,theirfacessmearedwithdirtandsweat,buttheirdeterminationunwavering.Eachlifetheysavedwasaglimmerofhopeinthisseaofdespair.
