However,fordecades,concussionhasbeenconsideredatemporaryinjurywithnolong-termconsequences.Manyathleteswilldojustaboutanythingtostayonthefieldand“playthroughthepain”asasignoftoughness.In2005,withthereleaseofthebraintissuepathology(病理学)reportofMikeWebstera,aretiredNationalFootballLeagueplayer,ourthinkingonconcussionbegantoshift.Sincethen,publicattentionhasfocusedonthislinkbetweenbraininjuryandblowstothehead.Asourunderstandingofconcussionprogressedtounderstandingitssignificanceasaninjury,sotoodidthedevelopmentofplayerequipment.

Intheearly1900sfootballwasplayedwithouthelmets(头盔),butsevereinjuries,likeskullfractures,ledtotheoccasionaluseofleatherhelmetsinthe1920s.Thefirstfacemaskenteredthegameinthe1950s.Modernhelmetsuseadvancedshellmaterials,havemoveablepanelstoabsorbforces,andmulti-layeredpaddingthatrespondstodifferentimpacts.Companieswillcontinuetoimprovehelmetsasnewmaterialsbecomeavailable,guidedbythenewestscience.
