Bornin1864inVirginia,USA,AnnaJarviswasaschoolteacherandbelievedchildrenshouldshowgratitudetotheirmothersforalltheirloveandcare.Encouragedbyafriend,shewrotetothousandsofimportantpeople—politicians,churchmen,doctors,cityofficials—andaskedthemtosupportheridea:aspecialdayoftheyearforthankingmothers.

In1910theGovernorofWestVirginiaintroducedMother’sDayintothestate.ThedatechosenwasMay10—thesecondSundayinMay,whichisstillobservedinAmericatoday.ThisdatewaschosenbecauseMay10wasthedateonwhichin1908AnnaJarvis’smotherhaddied.In1914PresidentWoodrowWilsonmadeMay10theofficialdateforMother’sDaythroughouttheUnitedStates.

SoontherewasaMother’sDayInternationalAssociationandthecustombegantobeadoptedinmanycountriesoftheworld.
