ABSTRACT:Anewcationicpolyfluorenederivativewith20mol%2,1,3-benzothiadiazole(BT)contentwas
synthesizedviaSuzukicross-couplingpolymerization.Thehighchargedensityandcationicoligo(ethyleneoxide)
sidechainsenduethepolymerwithagoodwatersolubility(12mg/mL),leadingtoalowinherentBTemission
backgroundinbuffer.Additionofnegativelychargedheparinintothepolymersolutioninducespolymer
aggregation,givingrisetoenhancedenergytransferfromthefluorenesegmentstotheBTunits.Withincreasing
heparinconcentrations,theorangeBTemissionintensityprogressivelyincreasesattheexpenseofthebluefluorene
emission.Incontrast,additionofhyaluronicacid,ananalogueofheparin,resultsinaninsignificantenhancement
inBTemission.Thisselectiveopticalsignaturenotonlyallowsdistinguishingheparinfromhyaluronicacidbut
alsohighlightstheimportanceofelectrostaticattractionbetweenthepolymerandtheanalyteinanenergytransfer
process.HeparinquantificationisdemonstratedbythelinearintensityincreaseintheBTemissionasafunction
ofheparinconcentration,providingapracticalcalibrationscoperangingfrom30nMto48µM.Moreover,the
distinguishablesolutionfluorescentcoloratdifferentheparinconcentrationsmakesnaked-eyeheparindetection
andquantificationfeasible.Thisstudyhencereportsageneralapproachtoconstructconvenientmulticolor
biosensorsusingcationicconju
