to-Chineseinterpretatingspanningapproximately155minutes.Theoriginalspeeches
aremadeupofadistinctiveuseofEnglishbynon-nativespeakersandspontaneityin
content.Suchfeaturespresentasignificantchallengefortheinterpreter,resultingin
noticeableinstancesofdisfluency.Inlightofthis,thisreportaimstoanalyzethe
specificmanifestationsandunderlyingcausesinordertoimprovesubsequent
interpretingperformance.
Disfluenciesinthistaskareprimarilymanifestedthroughpauses,repeats,and
self-repairs.Theauthortracestheincidenceofdisfluenciestoherinsufficiencyin
comprehensionandexpression.Thecomprehensioninquestionisprimarilyimpacted
bythequalityofthesourcelanguageandtheinadequatepreparationbytheinterpreter.
Theauthor’slimitedresourcesinexpressionandnote-takingskillsfurtherconstrainthe
finaldelivery.Thisreportthereforeclarifiesfortheauthortherelationshipbetween
comprehensionandskillprogression.
Movingforward,theauthorshould:(1)strengthenexercisesinrephrasingand
paraphrasingtoenhancelogicalthinkingandcomprehensionabilities;(2)engagein
extensivereadingofparalleltextstoimproveproficiencyinthetargetlanguage;(3)
stayinformedofcurrentsocialissuesindailylifetomakepre-taskpreparationsmore
targeted;and(4)organizenotessystematicallywithlogicalsymbols,whilealso
enhancingself-monitoringindailypractice.
