Formerlyapolluted,derelictriverfront,MillRiverParkandGreenwayisnowaverdant,animated

civicspacethatmendstheecologicalandsocialfabricofdowntownStamford,Connecticut.

Workingcloselywithengineersandecologists,theteamconceivedofalandscapedesignedto

revitalizeaquaticandterrestrialhabitatsandreducefloodingbyrestoringthechannelizedriver’s

edgeandintroducinghundredsofnewnativeplants.Thetransformativeeffectofthisparkbuilds

onecologicalsustainabilityintosocialsustainabilityandsocialjustice.Aseriesofwalkingpaths

alongtheriverreconnectneighborhoodstothisvibrantlandscape,grantingaccesstotheriver’s

edgeforthefirsttimeinacentury.Thedesignprovidesmuchneededparkspaceforactiveand

passiverecreationandaflexible“GreatLawnandOverlook”forlargeprogrammedevents.A

modelforredefiningactiveurbanlife,theparkisacatalystforresidential,corporateandcommercial

growthandeconomicsustainability.

PROJECTNARRATIVE

Obstructedbydamming,channeling,pollutiondebrisandsiltbuildup,thetidalandpartially

brackishMillRiverposedasignificantfloodrisktodowntownStamford,Connecticut.Tomitigate

thisthreat,theU.S.ArmyCorpsofEngineersandtheCityofStamfordexecutedaprojectresulting

intheremovaloftwoconcretedams,allowingtherivertoflowfreelyforthefirsttimesincethe

1600s.Thisgreeninfrastructureprojectnotonlyprovidedhabitatrehabilitationandreducedriskof

flooding,butanopportunitytodevelopsurroundingparkspaceandunitethedowntownwiththe

waterfront,offeringrevitalizationtotheareaasawhole.

Fornearly100years,StamfordhaddreamedofaCentralParkintheheartofitsdowntownanda

gre
