Abstract
Thinfilmcomponentsofconventionalandflexiblesolid-statedevicesexperiencemechanicalstrainduringfabricationandoperation.
Atthebulkscale,smallvaluesofstraindonotaffectthermalconductivity,butthismaynottrueforgrainsizescomparablewiththe
electronandphononmeanfreepathsandforhighervolumefractionofgrainboundaries.Toinvestigatethishypothesis,thermal
andelectricalconductivityofnominally125-nm-thickaluminumfilms(averagegrainsize50nm)weremeasuredasfunctionsoftensile
thermo-mechanicalstrain,usingamodifiedversionofthe3-xtechnique.Experimentalresultsshowpronouncedstrain–thermalconduc-
tivitycoupling,with50%reductioninthermalconductivityat0.25%strain.Theanalysisshowsthatmechanicalstraindecreasesthe
meanfreepathofthethermalconductionelectrons,primarilythroughenhancedscatteringatthemovinggrainboundaries.Thiscon-
clusionissupportedbysimilareffectsofmechanicalloadingobservedontheelectricalconductioninthenanoscalealuminumspecimens.
