Personal names are used by people to refer to a specific person or some symbols which can distinguish one from others. However, they have some particular functions that no other signs can perform. Each person has his name which distinguishes himself from other members in the community, and each country has its own name system owing to their different historical and cultural background. As a kind of phenomenon peculiar to human beings, they bear strong relationship with society and culture. They are not only linguistic symbols, but also social symbols, representing relationship in societies and cultures. As an active and vivid cultural phenomenon, English names are connected closely to the history, culture, religion and custom. In a word, personal names are windows for people to see through different cultures in different societies— “A personal name is a mirror of culture”. [1:96]
1.1 Culture and personal names
Culture is investigated by scholars from different aspects. To them the scope of culture is different. Generally, culture has been interpreted in two senses, a broad sense and a narrow one. In its broad sense culture is the attributes of man. Culture in this sense may include at least the following components: materials, social institutions and organizations, knowledge, language, customs, and so on. And culture in its narrow sense can be defined as life way of a population. People’s name is a language phenomenon, and language is an important part of human culture.
