FRACTĀLEXisamultinationalofficepartitiondesignandproductioncompany.Theyworkwith

individualcorporationstodesigninteriorofficepartitioningschemesandthenmanufacture

(sometimesinternally,sometimesthroughsubcontractors),package,ship,andinstalltheir

products.ThecompanyisheadquarteredinasuburbofChicago,Illinois,butmanyofits

businessandsalesgroupsarelocatedthroughouttheglobe.Lastyear’srevenueswere$1.2

billion.Thatfigure,however,wassomewhatshortofmarketexpectations.Duetothe

increasingnumberofworkersworldwidewhosometimestelecommuteand,atothertimes,are

movingfromoneofficelocationtoanothertomeettheirclients’everchangingneeds,

FRACTĀLEXhasbeentryingtodesigncubiclesthataresimpletoassemble,dismantle,andthen

reassemble,andcanmeetthechangingneedsofanindividualcubicle’svaryingoccupants(a

projectmanageroneday,alogisticianthennext,etc.).

FRACTĀLEX’sCMO,InaJoubert,hasdecidedtoproposetotheboardofdirectorsthatthe

companyinvestinthedevelopmentofagroundbreaking,technologicallyadvancedoffice

partitioningsystem.Thefeaturesofthissystemwouldinclude:

•Partitionsandattachments(desks,hangingfiles,etc.)whoseverticalsurfaceswould

houseOLED(organiclightemittingdiode)touchscreenswhichcouldbeprogrammedto

fulfillvariousfunctions(e.g.,computertouchscreens,teleconferencescreens)all

networkedtothecompany’scomputingcloud.

•Cubicleconfigurationswouldbepre-determinedbyitsoccupant’smosttechnologically-

demandingrole.Eachintheorganizationwouldhavearole(s)profile,andthat

profilewoulddeterminetheircubicle’scapabilitiesandinformationaccessibility.

•Allfurnitureandpartitionswouldhaveroboticcapabilitiesbuiltintothemsothattheir
