Forrest was born on June 6, 1944, near the fictional small town of Greenbow, Alabama. He and his mother lived in a large house just outside the town. They made money by renting rooms to travelers. His mother always told him that his father was on vacation as the father was absent during his life. Forrest was forced to wear leg braces which made it very difficult to walk or run. He also had a relatively low IQ of 75 which kept him from going to public school. Despite his physical and mental challenges, Forrests mother encouraged him and told him stupid is as stupid does.
