Abstract: By means of contant load tests of welded 16MnR steel in 110 , 40%NaOH solution, stress corrosion
cracking ( SCC) of its weldzone and the effect of acid pickling on corrosion cracking were studied. Results showed that it
was reasonable to choose - 980mV vs SCE, according to polarization curve, as the most SCC susceptible potential. At
this potential, SCC of 16MnR weldzone was found just in two days in 110 40% NaOH solution. T he initiated crack
was propagated to rupture after pickling with acid. The acid pickling results in serious deterioration of the weldment. In
order to prevent pipes from cracking failure, reducing residual stress of weldment and choosing proper corrosion inhibitors
are necessary.
