A B S T R A C T : Fundamentals of composite material technology are applied to the
investigation of multi-ply cord-reinforced rubber systems as used in pneumatic
tires. The stiffness parameters of such multi-ply systems are determined through
the use of the elastic properties of the constituent cord and rubber components.
The effects of coupling between the bending and stretching modes of deformation
are discussed along with the limitations of present composite material technology
as applied to soft rubbery systems. The predicted stiffness parameters are related
to tread wear, obstacle envelopment, vibration, and stress analysis of tires.

The material properties of the constituent components of the pneumatic
tire--cord and rubber--have been studied in detail by investigators in the
industry since the early days of tire production. Thus, the effect of twist
on the stress-strain properties of cotton tire cord and the reinforcing effect
of carbon black on the modulus of natural rubber were well known phe-
nomena many decades ago. On the other hand, the material properties
(specifically, the elastic constants) of the cord-rubber composite system
that constitutes the tire are not as well known and ha
