美国大学教育体制(American university education system) The high level of American culture and education also determines Americas leading position in the world of science and technology. In the eyes of Americans, everyone should have the opportunity to receive the best education to develop their talents and abilities. Since the early nineteenth Century, the ideal of compulsory education has been continuously supported by the masses. Many political and religious leaders point out that the prosperity and power of the United States is in fact a result of the spread of education. Between 1830 and 1850, great educators, such as HoraceMann, Barnard, HenryBarnard, and others, were constantly running around to get the governments management and support for early and high school education. Finally, in 1852, Massachusetts passed the first law on compulsory education for children. After the civil war in 1865, many states began to set up public junior high schools and high schools. State universities and agricultural colleges and technical colleges have also grown alarmingly. In the early twentieth Century, the idea that everyone should receive high school education has gained wide support in the United states. After graduating from high school, the number of applicants for admission to college has increased substantially, and the number of college and college students has increased considerably since then. Today, nearly 6 million of Americans attend schools, colleges, or universities, while millions of other Americans attend adult education programs. Nearly all American children receive at least 8 years of education, 75% of high school graduates, and 25% of diplomas from four year colleges and universities. Education programs have made the United States one of the worlds most educated countries, with only 1% of Americans unable to read and write.
