Vehicles exhibiting good handling generally incorporate suspensions with high spring and damping rates, resulting in small suspension deflections. While the refinement of passive suspension systems for modern automobiles has resulted in acceptable levels of both handling and ride quality under common road conditions, these systems are not typically optimized for any particular type of terrain. Passive suspension performance characteristics still represent a major compromise between ride quality, handling, suspension travel, and controlling body motion. The suspension system is the main tool to achieve ride comfort and drive safety for a vehicle. Passive suspension systems have been designed to obtain a good compromise between these objectives, but intrinsic limitations prevent them from obtaining the best performances for both goals.
