Communication: An Intercultural Perspective Chapter 1 Contents 1. What is communication? Human communication is as old as mankind? Communication: A form of human behavior derived from a need to connect and interact with other human beings. Occurs whenever meaning is attributed to behavior or the residue(残渣,后果) of behavior. Communication: Components Message Sender Receiver Channel Noise Feedback Encoding Decoding Encoding and decoding are of great significance to successful communication. E.g. “You’re a sexy girl.“ Case study Listen to a story of Litz, a Finnish and her Chinese mother-in-law. Here is the conversation: Litz: Dick, how long is your mum going to stay? Dick: I don’t know.
