A Switched System Model for Heat Exchangers using a Moving
Boundary Method
Thomas L. McKinley, and Andrew G. Alleyne, Senior Member, IEEE
Abstract—This paper presents a new switching scheme for example, suppose a model is constructed for a condenser in
moving boundary thermo-fluid models of heat exchangers. a vapor compression cycle assuming that there is a zone of
Pseudo state variables are introduced to accommodate the superheated vapor entering the heat exchanger, a zone of
changing roles of dynamic variables as the number of different two phase refrigerant, and a zone of sub-cooled liquid
zones is changing. As a result, the number of states is
leaving the heat exchanger. These three zones then remain
conserved throughout the switches, but the forcing functions of
the state derivatives change. A unique switching criteria based as part of the model. Should there be a sudden transient to
on void fraction is introduced and shown to be critical for mass the system that would cause a loss of sub-cooled liquid, only
conservation. Simulation results verify both the validity of the two zones would be needed to describe the dynamics (two-
switched moving boundary model as well as its usefulness in a
