Rational emotive therapy (ABC theory)
Rational emotive therapy was created in Ellis in the United States in 1950s. It is a form of cognitive therapy. Therefore, it adopts some methods of behavior therapy, so it is also called cognitive behavioral therapy.
The basic theory of rational emotive therapy is the ABC theory, which is based on Elliss basic view of human beings. Elliss views on human nature can be summed up in the following points:
(1) a person can be rational, reasonable, or irrational and unreasonable. When people think and act according to reason, they will be happy, competitive and effective;
(2) emotion is accompanied by peoples thinking, and emotional or psychological distress is caused by irrational and illogical thinking.
(3) man has a tendency of biology and sociology, and tends to be irrational in rational, rational and irrational thinking. That is, anyone inevitably has more or less irrational thought and beliefs;
(4) man is a creature of language, and the thought is carried out by means of language, and constantly repeats some irrational beliefs with internalized language, which leads to an emotional disorder that cannot be resolved.
(5) the persistence of emotional disturbances is actually the result of the constant effect of internalized language. As Ellis said, those words that we continue to speak to ourselves are often, or become, our thoughts and emotions.
To this end, Ellis declared, the emotions of man are not caused by an induced event, but by the interpretation and evaluation of the person who has undergone the event.. This is the basic point of the ABC theory. In the ABC theory, A refers to the induced events; B refers to the individual in the face of consequential events induced by faith, his views of the incident, interpretation and evaluation; C refers to the specific situation, emotion and behavior of individual results.
