Welding Cast Iron
Types of Cast Iron
There are four major types of cast iron - gray cast as the first step in the making of malleable
iron, malleable iron, ductile (nodular) iron, and iron, a much more useful material.
white (or chilled) iron. Most cast-iron parts are Malleable Iron: This material is a white cast
made in gray iron. Gray cast iron, malleable iron iron that has been heat treated by a long annealing
and ductile (nodular) iron are difficult to weld but process (usually lasting 2 or 3 days) that changes
they can be welded when the proper procedures are the combined carbon (iron carbide or cementite)
used. Malleable iron and ductile iron require long into iron and a uniformly distributed temper carbon
post heat treatment to restore their normal strength
