Abstract : Due to its composition complexity, rational application of vacuum residue must be based on the full
understanding of its properties and structure. Mixed oil of light vacuum residues from Iran and Saudi Arabian was
separated into 6 narrow fractions and an end-cut by supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation (SFEF) technology.
Properties and compositions of narrow fractions were determined, which provided important basic data for structure
characterization of ebullated bed hydrogenation feedstock. The results indicate that as the yield of narrow fraction
increases, contents of S and N increase as well as metal content and the value of residual carbon When the fraction
becomes heavier, contents of saturates and of resins decrease, aromatics content gradually increases, there is little
asphaltene in every narrow fraction. The average structural parameters of narrow fractions and vacuum residuum were
calculated with modified Brown-Ladner method. The characteristic index(KH) was used to assess process capability.
