Abstract The use of so ar ref ective coatings on the bui ding enve ope can reduce the energy consumed by the air
conditioner and provide a t herma y comfortab e indoor env ironment. Performance of the energy sav ing coating is
c ose y re ated to its ref ectance. The higher ref ectance in the so ar spectrum, the more energy cou d be saved. The
effects of wave ength, incident ang e and thickness of the coatings on ref ectance are investigated based on the
measurement resu ts. The bidirectiona ref ectance distribution functions ( BRDF) at visib e wav e ength 635 nm and
near-infrared wave ength 980 nm are measured and the effects of coating thickness on the norma-hemispherica
ref ectance which is ca cu ated from the measured BRDFs are discussed. The resu ts show that there is a remarkab e
peak at the specu ar direction in the BRDFs. The peak va ue becomes high as the incident ang e and wave ength
