Cohesion: How are the words in the text linked together by cohesion? How does the cohesion help the intended communication? Coherence: how do the ideas in the text relate to each other? Is this a genre? How does the coherence help the intended communication? Culture: how do any cultural elements in the text relate to each other? How do any cultural elements in the text relate to the wider context? Critique: Are there any language elements or ideas in the text which should be critically examined? How do language elements or ideas in the texts relate to issues of power or ideology in society? Context Cohesion Coherence Culture Critique Context Definition : generally thought of as the environment of a text: the immediate situation and the wider context of culture Specific angles: Time Place Characters Focal events Major clash Result Cohesion Definition: it refers to the ties and connections which exist within oral or written texts. It signifies the surface ties which link phonological , syntactical, lexical and semantic units together. Lexical: synonyms, opposites, hyponyms, collocations Grammatical: reference (pronoun), substitution, ellipsis, conjunction Coherence Definition: concerning with the way speakers or writers link their utterances or texts together in a meaningful and logical manner Specific angles: Macro-structure Signaling Rules of order Rhetorical relations Clause relations Culture Definition: shared beliefs and expectations, socially transmitted and shared knowledge, behavior, attitude and values related to particular communities.
