Introduction:
Anaerobicammoniaoxidation(anammox)isabiologicalprocessthattakesplaceunderanaerobicconditionsandisresponsiblefortheremovalofnitrogenfromwastewater.Thisprocessiscarriedoutbyanaerobicammoniaoxidizingmicroorganisms(anammoxbacteria)thatconvertammoniumandnitritetodinitrogengas.However,anammoxisacomplexprocessthatdependsonmanyfactors,includingpH,temperature,andthepresenceofcertainsubstances,suchassugars.Sugarsarewidelypresentinwastewater,andtheirinfluenceonanammoxbacteriametabolismisnotyetclear.
Objectives:
Themainobjectiveofthisresearchistoinvestigatetheeffectofsugarsonanammoxbacteriametabolismandtoexplorethepotentialofnoveldenitrificationprocesses.Specificobjectivesare:
1.Todeterminetheoptimalconcentrationofdifferentsugarsforanammoxbacteriagrowthandmetabolism.
2.Toinvestigatetheeffectofsugarsonanammoxbacteriametabolicpathwayusingmoleculartechniques.
3.Toevaluatethepotentialofsugar-drivendenitrificationprocessesforwastewatertreatment.
Methodology:
Theresearchwillbeconductedinalaboratoryusingabatchtestapproach.Anammoxbacteriawillbeculturedunderanaerobicconditionsinthepresenceofdifferentsugars(e.g.,glucose,fructose,sucrose,etc.)atvariousconcentrations.Themicrobialactivitywillbemonitoredbymeasuringnitrogentransformationratesandbiomassgrowthusinganalyticalinstruments.Themicrobialcommunitystructureandmetabolicpathwaywillbeanalyzedusingmolecularbiologytechniquessuchasnext-generationsequencingandmetagenomicanalysis.Finally,thepotentialofsugar-drivendenitrificationprocessesforwastewatertreatmentwillbeevaluatedbydesigningandtestinganoveldenitrificationsystem.
