An Overview and New Progress of Hybrid Excited Synchronous
Machines and Control Technologies

ABSTRACT: The hybrid excited synchronous machines
(HESMs) can operate in a wide-range speed, which
incorporates the advantages of the permanent magnet
synchronous machine (PMSM) and the electrical excitation
synchronous machine (EESM), and avoids their shortcomings.
So it has been widely applied in power generation and drive
systems over a wide range of speeds. In this paper, the basic
characteristics of HESM are discussed, and several kinds of the
typical structure and operation principles of HESM are
analyzed. A novel topology of HESM is proposed. The
mathematic model of HESM is derived. Based on stage control, 0
the control system is established. Several control strategies are
analyzed in both low and high speed regions. Based on the
analysis of the problem existing in the control technology of
HESM, a novel efficiency optimization control strategy of
