Abstract Abstract Meteor burst communication (MBC) is a unique type of radio communication. Meteor burst communication channels are known for their intermittent and large variations of received signal power. The frame length has an enormous effect on the waiting time and the throughput of meteor burst communication. Therefore, an important research area is to determine the optimal frame length in the meteor burst communication. In this paper, we mainly focus on the throughput performance of selective-repeat automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) in conjunction with adaptive rate schemes. And an optimization design method of frame length is presented based on the analysis of characteristics of meteor channel. Firstly, we build the meteor burst communication model using OPNET software to determine the optimum range of frame length. Secondly, the probability density function of the initial signal to noise ratio (SNR) received is derived from the line electron density distribution of meteor bursts. Finally, we propose analytical expressions for average throughput performance of selective-repeat ARQ as combined with adaptive scheme for meteor burst communication. With these expressions, we can obtain an optimal frame length from the frame length range derived above. The simulation results show that the optimized frame length increases the average throughput of the meteor burst communication system, which may lay the foundation for practical applications of meteor burst communications.
