Inadequate tolerance
The examples we have here are all Plus-X films. What about the degree of latitude in the area of exposure to other films?
Most black and white films have almost the same tolerance in terms of lack of exposure, that is, the 2 stop aperture, which should be a good news. So we dont have to remember the tolerance of different black and white films, and remember that the exposure of the important shadow areas should be limited to 2 shades. On the whole, this will lead to a secure exposure. In fact, when important light areas are not very bright, you can try to set the exposure to only 1 of the shaded area readings. This method will be safer.
What about the glare zone? Since we are more tolerant of overexposure, in most cases, even if we are exposed to the area, we can also limit the glare to the degree of latitude of the film. Especially when we use Tri-X film, its width range reaches 9. The Tri-X can handle overexposed exposures with 2 apertures, plus 7 aperture overexposure. As a result, it has very large latitude in the glare zone.
Of course, in many cases the range of brightness in the scene is large beyond the films tolerance. In this case, we have to decide which details are more important, including the details of the glare and shadow areas. So we have to sacrifice some other details.
One solution is to use films with greater latitude. For example, at first we were using Plus-X film (with a 7 aperture tolerance), and now we can switch to Tri-X film (with a 9 aperture tolerance).
If that doesnt work, then well have to make sure the details are more important - the shadows or the glare. We must first identify something. In the example of the girl on the beach ahead, what we should show is, of course, the facial features of the model, because it is much more important than the details of the sky.
