Options For Current Future POF Home Networks
Authors: Bill Rollins Arvind Mallya - ATT
As an IPTV home networking service provider, ATT is rapidly increasing our U-verse
video product customer base. To meet the service needs for our customers, we continue to
refine our support processes, and evaluate alternative solutions perceived as not viable or cost
effective in the past.
Noise and other disturbers present issues to our U-verse customer’s quality of service. We
continue to exhaust numerous man hours, and multiple repair tickets for issues found in the
outside plant environment, or in the customer’s home.
This paper examines the potential for use of plastic optical fiber as an alternative cable
medium (as compared with COAX or CAT5) for Telco installation and maintenance in IPTV
home networking environments.
A review of significant positive findings, from a recently completed Plastic Optical Fiber
Technology Evaluation (Proof of Concept Study) in single family homes will be shared.
Observations also were conducted to see if POF could reduce overall U-verse installation or
repair times, and mitigate known sources of noise (noisy homes with treadmills, fish tanks,
pool pumps, etc.) or HPNA issues.
Descriptions of U-verse IPTV interferers (including noise, wifi) and a comparison of current
home networking products and environmental concerns will be included in the discussion.
In concert with a proof of concept approach for POF, ATT is working with our existing set
top box and residential gateway vendors to support testing of integrated (POF) ports in the
STB and RG. Current activities and working configurations of IPTV U-verse (non-
production) connected to integrated POF ports in prototype set top boxes will be noted.
