Air Pollution 环境科学11级 赵晓舒 Air is the ocean we breath. Air supplies us with oxygen which is essential for our bodies to live. What is air pollution? Air pollution is normally defined as air that contains one or more chemicals in high enough concentrations to harm humans, other animals, vegetation or materials. There are two types of air pollutants A primary air pollutant is a chemical added directly to the air that occurs in a harmful concentration. Example carbon dioxide a lead compound emitted by cars burning A secondary air pollutant is a harmful chemical formed in the atmosphere through a chemical reaction among air components. Example sulfur dioxide carbon dioxide Nitrogen oxides Sulfur oxides?(SOx) Nitrogen oxides?(NOx) Carbon monoxide?(CO) Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) Particulates Persistent free radicals Effect There are several well-known effects of pollution, which are commonly discussed. Smog Acid rain Greenhouse effect Ozone hole Smog Smog?is a type of air?pollutant. It is caused by chemical reaction between pollutants derived from different sources, primarily automobile exhaust and industrial emissions. Smog is a serious problem in many cities and continues to harm human health. ?It can inflame breathing passages, decrease the lungs working capacity, cause shortness of breath, pain when inhaling deeply, wheezing, and coughing, ect. Smog Acid rain Acid rain?is a?rain?or any other form of?precipitation?that is unusually?acidic, meaning that it possesses elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low?pH) . Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters and soils, killing insect and aquatic life-forms as well as causing damage to buildings and having impacts on human health . Greenhouse effect The?greenhouse effect?is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions . Owing to?the?rise?of the?temperature ,it will affect u
