Abstract
This paper chooses four IT (information technology) enterprises (Huawei, ZTE, Netac and Tencent) in
Shenzhen of China to discuss their IP management in different development stages and different
technological fields. The result of research indicates that (1) in the environment of high technological
and marketing uncertainty, “second-mover advantage” and “first-mover advantage” exist at the same
time to IT enterprises in emerging economy. So it is necessary for IT enterprises to implement
indigenous innovation, accumulate IP as well as to adjust and improve capabilities of IP management to
acquire and keep sustainable competitive advantage. (2) IP protection is just one of the functions of IP
management. IT enterprises should pay more attention to IP creation and applied to gain sustainable
competitive advantage. (3) It is necessary for IT enterprises to evaluate interior and exterior level of IP
protection and utilize relative IP tools such as patent, trademark, copyright, and busin
