The book contains three parts after the introduction and theoretical chapters. The two chapters in Part I lay out the background of the Western Zhou Dynasty (ca. 1045-771 BCE) which was a formative age of the Chinese civilization. I focus on the nature of the state at the time, as well as social and geographic/climatic conditions. The core of the book is Part II, which focuses on the history of China from the Spring Autumn and Warring States Era (770-221 BCE, Eastern Zhou Dynasty hereafter) to the early part of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 8 CE).
