High-risebuildingsarethemostcomplexstructuresinthemodern

world.Thestructuralbehaviorofhigh-risebuildingsishighlydependent

ontheinteractionbetweenthesuperstructure,foundation,andsoil.The

foundationofhigh-risebuildingsisanessentialelementthatprovides

stabilityandsupportthroughoutthelifeofthestructure.Themost

commontypeoffoundationforhigh-risebuildingsisthepileraft

foundation.Inthistypeoffoundation,thepilestransfertheloadfrom

thesuperstructuretothesoilwhiletheraftactsasadistributionbeam.

Inthispaper,wewillanalyzethefiniteelementmethodforthe

interactionbetweenthepile-raftfoundationandthesoil.

FiniteElementModeling

Thefiniteelementmethod(FEM)isoneofthemostcommonly

usedmethodstoanalyzethebehaviorofcomplexstructures.TheFEM

isanumericalmethodusedtosolvedifferentialequationsbydividing

thestructureintosmallelementsandsolvingthemindividually.Inthis

method,thestructuralbehaviorofeachelementisapproximatedusing

amathematicalmodelbasedonthelawsofphysics.

Fortheanalysisofthepile-raftfoundation,wefirstcreateathree-

dimensionalmodelofthestructureusingsoftwaresuchasAutoCADor

REVIT.Oncethemodeliscreated,weimportitintoafiniteelement

analysissoftwaresuchasANSYSorABAQUS.Wethendividethemodel

intosmallelementsandapplythenecessaryboundaryconditions.

Theinteractionbetweenthepile-raftfoundationandthesoilis

modeledusingacontactelement.Thecontactelementdefinesthe

interfacebetweenthefoundationandthesoilandtakesintoaccount

thefrictionandadhesionbetweenthetwo.Thepropertiesofthesoil

aredefinedusingsoilmechanicsparameterssuchassoilmodulus,soil

density,andsoilPoissonsratio.Theseparametersaredetermined
