Abstract: English famous writer Thomas Hardy, his greatest novel “Tess of D’Urbervilles” described the tragic fate of a poor peasant girl Tess. This article explores Tess’s tragedy of fate and its reason. Hardy’s view of love contains in the novel is embodied in the comment of “a pure woman” that the writer gives to Tess. The paper tells that Tess’s tragedy comes to being the destruction of religious society and the triumph of capitalist society in the course of the historical development. And Tess’s bourgeois morality and religious idea had made her own tragedy. As for Tess her choices of natural pure quality from countryside betrayed the capitalist society lead to her own tragedy. Hardy displayed his objection of religion and earthliness imposed twisty ideas and restrictions on love through the description of human beauty and ugliness and love. It reflects his attitudes toward life and love. The pure love will surpasses flesh. Speak directly by heart. Those rancid ideas were sad to put an end. The enjoyment of pure spirit is the love sublimation what we got at that time.
