TheShanghaiWorldExpo,alsoknownastheWorldExpositionEXPO2010,wasamajorinternationaleventheldinShanghai,ChinafromMay1toOctober31,2010.ItwasthelargestWorldExpoinhistorywitharecord-breakingattendanceofover73millionvisitorsfromaroundtheworld.InordertopromoteandprovideinformationabouttheExpo,awebsitewascreated.ThewebsitewasavailableinbothChineseandEnglish,butthequalityoftheEnglishtranslationwasnotalwaysaccurate,makingitdifficultforEnglish-speakingvisitorstofullyunderstandtheinformationprovided.

Thisresearchaimstoanswerthefollowingquestions:

1.WhatwerethemaintranslationchallengesfacedintheEnglishversionoftheShanghaiWorldExpowebsite?

2.WhatstrategiescanbeemployedtoimprovethequalityoftheEnglishtranslationontheShanghaiWorldExpowebsite?

Methodology

Theresearchwilluseacombinationofqualitativeandquantitativemethods.Firstly,contentanalysiswillbeconductedontheShanghaiWorldExpowebsitetoidentifytranslationerrors,inconsistencies,andculturalbiasesintheEnglishversion.Secondly,asurveywillbeconductedwithasampleofEnglish-speakingvisitorstothewebsitetogaugetheirunderstandingandsatisfactionwiththetranslation.Finally,interviewswillbeconductedwithprofessionaltranslatorsandeditorstogatherinsightandrecommendationsonhowtoimprovethetranslationquality.

ExpectedOutcomes

TheresearchisexpectedtoidentifythemainchallengesintranslatingChineseculturalandlinguisticconceptsintoEnglishaswellasareasofcommonmisunderstanding.Basedonthefindings,theresearchwillrecommendstrategiesandtechniquesforimprovingtheEnglishtranslationquality,suchasemployingprofessionaltranslatorsandeditors,usingmachinetranslationcoupledwithhumanpost-editing,andengagingwithnativeEnglish-speakingeditorsfor
