Strategy for Broadcast Authentication
in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Hierarchical Merkle Tree

Abstract: As broadcast is a basic data-transmission approach in wireless sensor networks, broadcast authentication possesses
a very important position in the security mechanism of networks. Based on the Merkle tree broadcast authentication strategy,
a strategy for hierarchical Merkle tree broadcast authentication was proposed, of which the distribution of initial parameters
was discussed. The proposed strategy supports large-scale broadcast senders and reduces computation costs, memory
consumption and communication overhead effectively. The simulation indicates that the new strategy can achieve better
performance than the existing approaches in dealing with DoS attacks, the authentication rate and the failure recovery delay.
