Mobile data services,
the linchpin of 3G
Since the inception of its first commercial PLMN deployment in the Pearl River Delta in 1987, China has experienced unparalleled growth to become the largest mobile communication market in the world. Evidence of this growth can readily be seen in the total number of mobile subscribers, which had reached 335 million at the end of 2004. Likewise, great strides have been made in such areas as:the establishment of general standards, equipment manufacturing, and service/content provisioning.
Keeping pace with mobile communication developments in other parts of the world, China introduced GSM, or what is commonly referred to as its 2G mobile communication system, about ten years ago. Over the course of the last ten years China’s mobile communication market has grown to become the largest mobile communication market in the world, presently having the largest number of mobile subscribers and PLMN. Today, almost all of the world-famous mobile communication networks and terminal manufacturers have representatives, offices,or are conducting varying degrees of operations in China. Due to the great development potential in China’s mobile communications market, competition has become fiercer in recent years. However, having said this, China still has the lowest network equipment prices and service charges than anywhere else in the world.
The mysterious 3G license in China
With the emergence of 3G technologies, and China now being the largest mobile communication market, it stands to reason that China has become the primary focus of attention in the telecommunications world. So much so that now economists, professionals, and even common people talk about the different aspects of 3G development in China. However, 3G licensing in China still remains a mystery at present.
